Traditional Matches

In a traditional, one-to-one, community-based mentoring relationship:

  • Eligible Bigs are carefully matched with a "Little" (based on several different criteria - i.e. geographic location, similar interests, etc.) on a long term basis (for approximately one year).

  • The Big commits to meeting with his/her Little on a regular, consistent basis.  Both the Big and the Little determine the type of activities they will engage in together.

  • The Big works very closely with our Community Coordinator through regular phone contact, personal conferences and group meetings.

  • The Big will serve as an exemplary role model and friend to the Little.

Getting together is a great time for both the Big and the Little. It doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activities, just a few hours every month to share the simple things you already like to do. You can...

  • Shoot hoops
  • Walk the dog
  • Play a board game
  • Take a walk in the park
  • Learn an art or craft
  • Rake leaves or weed your garden
  • Create a new recipe
  • Just talk and hang out

Role models make an impact

National and local studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs or commit crimes. In fact, the success of children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters was proven in a nationwide randomized study. Click here for more info...
